Architecture Internships in New York City

“The city seen from the Queensboro Bridge is always the city seen for the first time, in its first wild promise of all the mystery and beauty in the world.” -F. Scott Fitzgerald

Architecture Internships in New York City

With one of the most varied and numerous collections of skyscrapers in the world, New York City plays an important role in the world of architecture. Amazing examples of Gothic revival, Art Deco and international style can be spotted throughout the city. In fact, Manhattan is known for its diverse collection of buildings representing many different architectural styles. The city’s iconic and differing architecture make it an exciting and strategic place to earn work experience through an internship abroad.

Architecture internships in New York City will boost an aspiring architect’s career with real-world experience at a leading firm. Working alongside New York City architecture professionals allows a young person to develop professional skills and professional relationships. These working relationships are ideal when applying for jobs and looking for a recommendation or career advice. An international architecture internship provides a young person practical experience that will accompany theoretical learning. While working with first class architecture firms, an intern will work on either residential and commercial projects. Interns assist in the planning, design and construction of high quality projects and in presentations to clients.

Live the diversity

Diversity is an important part of what makes New York City great. The city is a melting pot of races, languages beliefs and culture. Walking through different neighborhoods can feel like traveling to completely different continents, as you can hear 800 different languages in the city. Because 36% of New York City’s inhabitants are foreign-born, many immigrants live within ethnic enclaves like Manhattan Chinatown and Little Brazil. With so many different cultures living side by side, some groups have mixed traditions with others creating incredible fusions of music, dance, food and culture.

Good eats

Thanks to such rich diversity, New York City is an amazing place to try foods with origins from all over the world. El Salvadorian, Mexican, Vietnamese, Ethiopian… you can find it all in the city – both authentic and Americanized. Fusion foods, like Kimchi tacos, are an incredible product of the American melting pot and are very prominent in New York. The city also has everything from tasty food truck grub to Michelin starred cuisine. Traditional New York City eats are also widely available. The classic New York cheesecake, a pastrami and corned beef sandwich or a coal-oven pizza are a delicious part of what the city has to offer.

“And New York is the most beautiful city in the world? It is not far from it. No urban night is like the night there…. Squares after squares of flame, set up and cut into the aether. Here is our poetry, for we have pulled down the stars to our will.” -Ezra Pound

Things to do

In terms of sights and activities, New York City has a lot to offer an intern looking for fun weekend activities. A trip to Central Park is an absolute must. The 843 acres park is full of winding pathways, sculptures and fountains, as well as the Central Park Zoo and iconic New York restaurant Tavern on The Green. A ferry ride on the Hudson River is another great way to spend a free afternoon, offering a wonderful view of the city.

For a rainy day, New York City’s museums are an excellent way to get to see famous works by both American and international artists. The modern art museum, MoMA, displays works by Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and Picasso. The MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and the Guggenheim Museum are other important stops for anyone with an interest in art.

Evenings in New York City are meant to be enjoyed. The city has hundreds of incredible venues for live music, comedy, cabaret, theater and everything in between. Of all the live entertainment options out there, Broadway rises above them all. Encompassing 40 of the city’s best professional stages, the Broadway theater district is known worldwide for the highest quality of live theater. That’s why in 2014 alone over 13 million people saw shows on Broadway. Current Broadway hits include the historical rap musical Hamilton and the musical comedy The Book of Mormon.
